Special Deletion of a Consonant

Rule #16

When an additive noun beginning with a consonant plus a vowel is added to a base or a postbase ending with two vowels plus a consonant, the latter consonant is often deleted.

  • qallunaaq +ni → qallunaa-ni (not qallunaar-ni)
  • qallunaaq +titut → qallunaa-titut (not qallunaar-titut)
  • nutaaq +mik → nutaa-mik (not nutaar-mik)
  • sallu-miuq +nut → sallu-miu-nut (not sallu-miur-nut)
  • inu-limaaq +nik → inu-limaa-nik (not inu-limaar-nik)
  • ukiuq +mi → ukiu-mi (not ukiur-mi)
  • ukiaq +mi → ukia-mi (not ukiar-mi)
  • … but umiaq +mi → umiar-mi or umia-mi

When an additive noun beginning with a consonant plus a vowel is added to a base or a postbase ending with jaq or taq, the final q in jaq or taq is usually deleted.

  • naujaq +mik → nauja-mik (not naujar-mik)
  • aujaq +mi → auja-mi (not aujar-mi)
  • nuvujaq +mik → nuvuja-mik (not nuvujar-mik)
  • piqalujaq +mik → piqaluja-mik (not piqalujar-mik)
  • tasi-ujaq +mik → tasi-uja-mik (not tasi-ujar-mik)
  • … but qajaq +mik → qajar-mik (not qaja-mik)
  • qirnitaq +mik → qirnita-mik (not qirnitar-mik)
  • irngutaq +minik → irnguta-minik (not irngutar-minik)
  • taku- +taq +minik → taku-ja-minik (not taku-jar-minik)
