Reduction of Vowel and Consonant Groups

Rule #15

We know that no more than two vowels can appear in a row. This is why the following processes occur.

  • qallunaaq /it → qallunaait → qallunaat
  • qallunaaq /Vk → qalunaaak → qallunaak
  • umiaq /u-vuq → umiau-vuq → umiangu-vuq
  • nani-miuq /u-vit → nani-miuu-vit → nani-miungu-vit
  • +nirpaaq /u-vuq → +nirpaau-vuq → +nirpaangu-vuq or +nirpau-vuq
  • nanuq /aaluk → nanuaaluk → nanualuk
  • saa /aaluk → saaaaluk → saaraaluk
  • umiaq /aaluk → umiaaaluk → umiaraaluk
  • kuuk /aaluk → kuuaaluk → kuugaaluk

We also know that no more than two consonants can appear in a row. This is why the following processes occur.

  • sinik- +ttaili-git → sinitttaili-git → sinittaili-git
  • itiq- +ttaili-git → itirttaili-git → itirtaili-git
  • tikit- +mmangaat → tikimmmangaat → tikimmangaat
  • itiq- +mmangaat → itirmmangaat → itirmangaat
  • tikit- +nnasaar-tuq → tikinnnasaar-tuq → tikinnasaar-tuq
  • tusaq- +ppat → tusarppat → tusarpat
  • nukaq +ppit → nukarppit → nukarpit
  • iqaluk +tjuaq → iqaluttjuaq → iqalutjuaq
