Rule of Double Consonants

Rule #17

We already know that no group of two consonants can follow another group of two consonants within the same word. This is because the following rule applies in Nunavimmiutitut.

When building a word, after all other rules have applied, if a group of two consonants is followed by another group of two consonants, the first consonant of the second group is deleted.

  • unnuk /kkut → unnukkut → unnukut

  • natsiq +siuq- /gunnaq- /ngngit- +tuq → natsirsiurunnangngittuq → natsisiurunnangittuq

It is particularly important to apply the rule of double consonants after all other rules have applied. If we apply the rules in the wrong order, the result is wrong.
