Non-Possessive Endings

Rule #19

The 8 possible non-possessive noun endings.

There is only one null ending in Inuktitut grammar, namely the basic case singular.

Nowaydays in Nunavik, the null ending is sometimes replaced by –on noun bases that end with a vowel. For example, one can hear tuttu-k instead of tuttu-Ø.

The symbol V serves to indicate the lengthening of the preceding consonant.

Examples

  • tuttu plus /Vk gives tuttuuk,
  • tupiq plus /Vk give tupiik.
